The narrator returns to visit their childhood piano teacher, who is deaf and uses a hearing aid. Seeing the unchanged house and garden, the narrator recalls fragments of their past, from her ill-fated piano lessons to her dead aunt's fondness for gardening. The narrator stopped the piano lessons when they, too, became deaf, despite the teacher's encouragement. Now, they have started playing again, and now understand what the teacher meant by 'harmony'.
