Notes

  • From the author's Preface : 'My book purports to be little more than a collection of sketches of curious people I have met with in my travels, woven into a simple though sorrowful story of a woman's love and devotion. ... I shall bow to [the reviewers' verdict] with the resignation of one who has tried "to hold the mirror up to nature" for the purpose of doing honour to truth and justice, under whatever unpretending form they may have presented themselves to my notice, and of showing that crime, in whatever deceptive garb it may be concealed, does not, even in this showy age of veneer and selfishness, unpunished go.'
