Ackland explores Richardson's attitude toward the autobiographical elements of The Getting of Wisdom and argues that the composition of the novel enabled her to establish vicariously through Laura Rambotham a myth of self-creation that prepared her for the composition of The Fortunes of Richard Mahony.
