The first full-length British study on the work of HHR focuses on the influence of the masters of European realism on the novelist, and on her original treatment of characters and narrative. The study contains a brief biography, a description of HHR's unusual inheritance as a 'colonial' in late nineteenth-century Germany, a detailed critical account of all her novels and stories, a discussion of her reputation, an appendix on the Nietzsche epigraphs in The Getting of Wisdom, and a select bibliography. It also contains a number of previously unpublished photos of HHR.
