  • Dedication: 'To our departed son, my friends of the past and bygone years and the younger ones of the present day, the contents of this book are affectionately dedicated'. (Preface).
  • Author's preface note: 'some of these lines were originally written and published over 30 years ago at the time of the Soudan Campaign and the despatch of the first contingent of troops to leave Australia for foreign shores to fight the Empire's battles. By slight alterations and revision these particular verses have, after this lapse of time, been made applicable to the present day'.
  • The book is divided into two sections: 'Patriotic and War Rhymes' and 'Various Verses'.
