Notes

  • Includes a lengthy poetic epigraph (perhaps a translation) which begins with the lines: 'And I went out to war/In armour bright. A sun-shot lance/...'
  • In The Australian Soldiers' Gift Book, the poem is attributed to Bulletin journalist and writer John Barr. Presumably 'The Snake' was one of Barr's writing names.
