Maddocks argues that Joe Wilson, as narrator, attains the balance of objectivity and imaginative evocation sought in Lawson's earlier fiction. The subject of the stories in Joe Wilson and His Mates is Joe Wilson's consciousness as it vacillates between objectivity and personal reminiscence.
