The events and characters in the thirteen historical novels of The Sounding Furrows saga are based on the experiences of the ancestors of the author in the Fingal Valley, Tasmania, during the century from 1834 to 1945. Jack S. Miller became a farmer in the Mangana district of the Fingal Valley in the 1950s. His family has had connections with the area since the early decades of the 19th C.

Series note: Books 1-7, (printed as Volumes 1-4), have been published (1995-1998). Books 1-4 have also been reprinted in 3 spiral bound volumes (1999?). Books 8 and 9 (described as Volumes 5 and 6), are unpublished. Books 10 and 11 (printed as Volume 7) have been published 2002. Books 12 and 13 (printed as Volume 8) have been published in 2003. This is the final in the series.
