AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'Man Is Never Free is an historical novel which has as its absorbing theme the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The story of George Loveless, his wife and family, is told with warmth and sincerity, but there is also the story, factual and for the first time complete, of the Dorchester Labourers.' Publisher's blurb on cover.

Notes

  • Dedication: To My Mother
  • Author's note: To say that no reference is meant by any of the characters in this story to any living persons would be quite safe because all those who were real characters are long since dead and the story covers the years 1831-1839. Most of the story is true. It contains very little fiction....Russell Winton, Bill Jamieson, old Redshaw and one or two others are imaginary characters who could quite easily take the place of the few persons with whom George Loveless would have associated during the years he was a convict, but all the main characters are real characters and most of the incidents with which they are linked actually did happen. 10 November 1944.
