The Jalasco Brig, Louis Becke , single work novella

After being dismissed by his South American employer for courting his employer's daughter, Kingston is offered a position as second mate and navigator on what he believes is the Brig Blossom. The ship is on the way to China when the boatswain tells him it had been seized by pirates and is actually the Jalasco, which belongs to his former employer. The ship is damaged on a coral reef and puts into Nukufetau, where Kingston devises a scheme to recapture the ship with the help of the islanders and return it to its rightful owner.

Hayes was accompanied by Hope, a native boy whose father Hayes had killed, not realising the man was trying to warn him of a plot against him. Hayes 'adopted' the boy and treated him with a degree of kindness.
