Notes

  • Authorship of this poem was attributed by John Meredith (q.v.) to Will Ogilvie (q.v.) in Breaker's Mate : Will Ogilvie in Australia. However, the poem was originally published under one of Hugh McKay's pseudonyms and Peter Kirkpatrick (q.v.) (email to AustLit, October 1997) states that the poem is obviously in McKay's style.

Ogilvie, a young Scottish writer who lived and worked in Australia during the golden years of Australian literature, the 1890s. Inspired by his experiences as a jackaroo, drover, shearer and horse-breaker on far-flung stations, Ogilvie wrote immensely popular ballads and stories that rivalled those of his contemporaries, Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson.'
