    The Beauteous Terrorist in the title poem was a remarkable young woman, a beautiful Russian aristocrat Sophia Perovskaia, who deserted her class to join the Terrorist Party which sought to overthrow the Czar. She was arrested and executed, a deed which prompted Sir Henry Parkes, a noted politician on the opposite side of the globe, to pen an epic poem in her honour. Back cover of the facsimile edition.
