Notes

  • Author's note: It is of no real moment whether this tale is taken for truth, or not. It would be as idle to insist that the work is one of pure fiction as to protest that everything that is written is one of pure fiction as to protest that everything that is written here has happened. Marshall is the most shadowy character, perhaps nearest in reality to myself, which is why my sympathies are with him. The others might be recognized, under different names, by anybody who knows New Guinea well. And we are all aware that the priest is dead. His obituary was published in the South Pacific Times, together with a picture of the man who killed him.
