      • Editor's note: This volume is the first complete collection of his poems that has been published. It incorporates the Collected Poems first published in 1934, and the two subsequent books, Beauty Imposes (1938) and Unpublished Poems of Shaw Neilson (1947). Though some juvenilia and other trifling pieces have been omitted, it is thus virtually the definitive Collected Poems.

      • Editors postcript: The acknowledgments in the first edition of this book (1965) were dated October 1964. Since then, quite a number of additional poems by Neilson have appearred, and a volume of texts, selected by Judith Wright and Val Vallis from material assembled by Ruth Harrison, was issued by Angus and Robertson in 1970 under the title of Witnesses of Spring. From these I have, with grateful ackowledgment, selected eleven poems, numbering them from 173 to 183. They are set out in approximately chronological order (1910 to 1941).
