'Early 1940, the Victorian Writers' League published a small volume of short stories by Alan Marshall. Small though it was, it was still the first book written by Marshall, but was never, to my knowledge, listed as such in any further books written by him, nor recorded as such by any reviewers or authors writing autobiographies or biographical studies. (...) There could be three reasons for this situation : one, very few copies were sold when it appeared and most were later burnt, by accident; two, Marshall never apparently made any direct attempt to rectify incorrect allegations; and three, it had the same title as Alan was to later use for his second book (...)' - John White, Alan Marshall and the Victorian Writers' League (1987).
