The novel follows the gathering of a theatrical talent agent, Tabitha Wane and some of her clients (including the friend at whose expense Tabitha got her first job and another friend at whose expense she got her current lover). Other characters include 'a vulpine producer and his shrike of a wife, Tabitha's uncertain male assistant; an ugly, gifted girl singer; a wandering novelists; and Tabitha's forlorn, bewildered mother'.
