AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The tale opens in London in 1856 when Walter Gerrard arrives from Hampshire to enter the public service of Queen Elizabeth. He is employed by the Queen's minister, Sir Francis Walshingham, and quickly finds himself entangled in the Catholic plots and intrigues surrounding the Protestant court. Jesuit priests, Sir Anthony Babington, Catholic noblemen, Queen Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scots, and a woman disguised as a youth are some of the ingredients of this tale of conspiracy, treason and romance.
