BiographyHistory

James Dymock was the elder brother of William Dymock, founder of the bookselling and publishing firm Dymocks. James emigrated from Scotland with his parents as a child, living first in the North Melbourne area, before relocating to Sydney about 1867. Here he found work in the book trade, working for William Maddock, one of the leading Sydney booksellers, and at the Sydney branch of leading Melbourne bookseller George Robertson. William Dymock also worked for Robertson in Sydney, and it seems likely that he benefited from his elder brother's experience and connections in the book trade.
