BiographyHistory

George Nicolaides lived in Cyprus and Egypt before emigrating to Australia in 1913. Shortly after his arrival he wrote some short stories which contributed toward the pioneering advancement of Greek literature, the Greek Press and Greek book publishing in Australia. In 1915, he established the second Greek newspaper in Australia, Oceanis [Ocean Nymph], as well as Parthenon, the first Greek magazine in Sydney in 1918. In 1927 he co-published a bilingual encyclopaedic work titled International Directory. This was the first Greek book published in Australia outside Sydney. He became a founding member of the 'Concord' Greek Philanthropic Association of South Australia, the first Greek organization in that state. Around 1935 he submitted a short story in English to The Wide World but the magazine declined to publish it.
