BiographyHistory

Donald Webster Cory is the pseudonym of Jewish-American academic Dr. Edward Sagarin. Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the City University of New York, Sagarin advocated for the rights of homosexuals and recognition for non-heterosexual lifestyles. His books sympathetically portray the circumstances of queer peoples in 1950s America, and were pioneering tracts that paved the way for the beginnings of reform in the US and UK in the late 1950s. Two of Cory's books The Homosexual and His Society and The Homosexual Outlook: A Subjective Approach were banned in Australia in the 1950s and 1960s.
