BiographyHistory

Margarita Djakanow was born in the city of Tomsk where she lived until after the 1917 Revolution. When in Moscow for two years, she visited museums, art galleries and theatres. In 1924, her family settled in Riga, Latvia. She received a law degree from the university in 1937 and a Master's degree in 1938. The occupation of Riga by Soviet troops in 1944 occasioned her relocation to Germany.

Djakanow wrote poetry from the age of fifteen. She was the winner of a Russian literary competition conducted by Grani magazine in 1962. Her collected poems were published in 1965. She died a few months after her retirement in 1969.
