BiographyHistory

English author best known for her school stories, including That Wild Australian School-Girl (q.v.) which used an Australian subject. English writers of the period found the Australian girl a useful change from other stereotypes like the spoilt American heiress or the wild Irish rebel in an English boarding-school. Traits such as colonial frankness and a regrettable accent are counterbalanced by democratic ways and a talent for tennis, singing and stopping runaway horses.
