A prominent early Australian schoolmaster and education theorist, Henry Carmichael graduated from St. Andrews University in 1820. He worked as a private tutor in London, before being engaged by
John Dunmore Lang to teach at the Australian College in Sydney. After falling out with Lang, Carmichael began his own school, and was also instrumental in the foundation of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, an institution dedicated to adult education.
