BiographyHistory

Clarke was an eminent geologist, sometimes called 'the father of Australian geology'. Before his arrival in Australia he published the following books of verse: Pompeii (1819), Carmen Exequaile (1821), The River Derwent (1822), Recollections of a Visit to Mont Blanc (1828) and Lays of Leisure (1829). He also wrote the words of the hymn Hail! Glorious Light of Life, music by Adelaide von Weber (Syd, 1870), and other poetry and songs on religious themes.
