Pate went to school at Christ Church Grammar School in Claremont, W.A. from 1948 to 1953, and then taught there from 1959 - 1971 and 1974-1999, when he retired. He endowed the school with the Arthur Pate Drama Awards 1984, suggesting that two criteria for the awards should be talent and discipline displayed in rehearsal and performance.
