This book presents the complete personal war diary written by Pte. Harold Reece, a young soldier of the Australian Imperial Force, who embarked from Sydney in 1916 to serve in France on the Western Front. The diary itself concludes when Harold was gassed in October 1918. His elder son Ian Reece has added valuable historical information about Australian society and family life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For post-war material, the author has drawn on primary sources collected by his father, especially those dealing with Harold's work for returned servicemen.
