Bruny D'Entrecasteaux was the leader of the French expedition that set out in 1791 in search of the missing La Pérouse. His vessels were the La Recherche and the L'Esperance and his passengers included the scientist Jacques Labillardière. Although not discovering La Pérouse, D'Entrecasteaux's expedition completed valuable cartographic work.
