BiographyHistory

Notes in the back of Australia: A Charcoal Sketch indicate that Cowan, Pennsylvanian lawyer, journalist and traveller, was in Australia in 1855. He claims that a Blue Mountains canyon, Cowan's Canyon, was named after him by George E. Cook, NSW Superintendent of Roads 'while on the wallaby with the writer: exploring, geologizing, botanizing: hungering, thirsting...'. (p.36). In fact, Cowan visited Australia in the 1880s, shortly before he published Australia: A Charcoal Sketch. He published many other works including some with New Zealand content.
