BiographyHistory

William Lockington came from New Zealand to Sydney, New South Wales in 1896 to join the Jesuits. After studying and teaching in England, Ireland and USA, he returned to Australia in 1913. Lockington was rector of various parishes and then headmaster of Riverview, Sydney, 1923-1931. A well known, if controversial preacher, he was a close associate of Melbourne's Archbishop Mannix. The town of Lockington in Victoria is named after him, honouring 'the noted author, preacher and lecturer'. Lockington's books include Bodily Health and Spiritual Vigour (1913) and The Soul of Ireland (1919), the latter with an introduction by G. K. Chesterton.
