BiographyHistory

General Sir Francis Hassett was the most decorated soldier in the Australian Army, earning five post nominal honours. He grew up in the Sydney suburb of Marrickville, and attended RMC in both Sydney and Canberra. His first military service was in the Libyan desert in World War II and he also served in Palestine, Syria, New Guinea and Bougainville. In 1951, Hassett led the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment to victory in the Battle of Maryang San in Korea.
