BiographyHistory

Josip (Joe) Grguric was born in a small village in Gorski Kotar, the western alpine part of Croatia, near Slovenia. He lived through difficult years of World War II as a painter's apprentice in Zagreb and served as a soldier in the Croatian army in the last year of the war. He arrived in Fremantle as a displaced person after spending four years in prisoner of war camps in Italy and Germany. Josip and his Australian-born wife, Domena, have contributed significantly to the creation and recognition of the Croatian community in Western Australia.
