'William Henry Williams was one of three foundation lecturers at the newly established University of Tasmania in 1892, and he was in charge of the undergraduate and Honours programs in Classics, English Language and Literature until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1925.

'Ralph Spaulding explores the formative experiences and influences which prepared Williams for his role as Tasmania's first professor of English: his study of Classics at Trinity College Cambridge; his teaching at The Leys School Cambridge and his subsequent headmastership of Newington College, Sydney. This biography focuses on his teaching of English at the University and compares Williams' program with those of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Universities; it also examines his scrupulous editing of texts by writers such as John Dryden, John Skelton and Nicholas Udall, noting that his editions of Ralph Roister Doister and Jacke Jugular won considerable praise from international scholars.' (Publication summary)

1 y separately published work icon Upper Heights and Lower Depths : Poems by Vivian Smith, Sid Harrex, Margaret Scott, Graeme Hetherington Ralph Spaulding (editor), Graeme Hetherington (editor), Port Adelaide : Ginninderra Press , 2022 24654627 2022 anthology poetry

'The four poets in this collection were born in the 1930s: Vivian Smith at Hobart in 1933; Margaret Scott at Bristol in the United Kingdom (1934); Syd Harrex at Smithton (1935) and Graeme Hetherington at Latrobe (1937). Apart from Gwen Harwood (born in the previous decade), these four writers made one of the most extensive contributions to Tasmanian poetry in the last decades of the twentieth century. Collectively, over one thousand of their poems have appeared in magazines and selected works from 1950 to the present day, and thirty-three editions of their poetry have been published (eleven by Smith, eight by Hetherington and seven by both Scott and Harrex).'  (Publication summary)

1 'Past Shapes of Things Present' in the Poetry of Syd Harrex (1935 – ) Ralph Spaulding , 2012 single work criticism
— Appears in: The Shadow of the Precursor 2012; (p. 48-61)
‘Syd Harrex was born in Smithton, Tasmania, in 1935 and completed his education in Hobart in the 1950s and 60s. He left Tasmania in 1966 to become a Foundation staff member at Flinders University from where he retired in 2001 as Reader in English and Director of the Centre for Research in the New Literatures in English. Harrex began writing and publishing poetry while a student at the University of Tasmania and his poetry retains something of the “silent croon” of his island home. This chapter considers Harrex’s kinship with the poetry of some of his contemporaries and predecessors. It shows how Harrex’s relationship with these writers is a creative dialogue that shapes and enhances his thematic concerns, rather than displaying any sense of Harold Bloom’s “anxiety of influence.” The chapter also charts Harex’s poetic journey through different Australian landscapes and from immediate and personal concerns to an exploration of some of the poetry’s universal themes.’ (48)
