BiographyHistory

John Service was a Scottish clergyman who, for health reasons, came to Australia in the 1860s. He spent some time at Wedderburn, Victoria, then went to Melbourne where his daughter died. He was then offered a parish in Tasmania, where he spent about 18 months. His novel Lady Hetty A Story of Scottish and Australian Life is set partly in Tasmania and based on Service's experiences there. His sermon Sorrow Not as Those That Have No Hope (Hobart: Walch, 1868) was preached at St John's Church, Hobart, on 14 June 1868. Service seems to have been related to James Service, who was Premier of Victoria from 1883 to 1886.
