The Q Theatre Company began producing lunchtime plays at the AMP Theatrette, Circular Quay, Sydney in 1963. In 1972 the Company diversified by introducing evening performances and touring the outer western suburbs of Sydney. In 1977 the Company decided to move from central Sydney to Penrith and re-establish as a regional company. It took up residence in the converted railway institute building and began staging an annual subscription season of five or six plays.
In 1983, the Company moved into another phase when the Railway Street Theatre Company was formed by merging with The New England Theatre Company. In 2005 the Company moved from the old institute building to the refurbished Joan Sutherland performing Arts Centre. To commemorate the years at its former home, the Company commissioned John Senczuk to create a celebration of the life and times of Q Theatre and its relationship with western Sydney.
