BiographyHistory

James Ruse is often referred to as Australia's first farmer. A convict sentenced to seven years transportation in 1782 for breaking and entering, Ruse arrived in the colony of New South Wales on the First Fleet in 1788. In 1789, he was given 12 hectares of land near Parramatta, which he turned into the colony's first real farm, growing grain and vegetables.
