'Marian Quartly studied at Adelaide and Monash Universities, and her first appointment was at the University of Western Australia. She has taught at Monash since 1980. She has served as editor of Australian Historical Studies, and also History Australia. Her research has ranged across nineteenth century Australia, covering the history of nationalism, the family, religion, and the construction of male and female sexualities. She has investigated various aspects of the history of gendered white citizenship in the twentieth century.
