'Born in California of British and Canadian parents, Gary [Gorman] had an academic background in theology and divinity and in library science. His doctoral research was a study of Anglican ministers in rural Australia. His long career in the LIS sector included information retrieval and librarianship positions in England; Senior Lecturer in Library Science at Charles Sturt University (to 1999); Senior Lecturer (1999–2001) and Professor of Information Management (2001–2011) at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand; and Professor of Information Science at the University of Malaya, Malaysia (2011–2012). Before his death, he was Co-Director of the Asia-New Zealand Informatics Associates, which provides consulting and training for informatics in Asia.'
