Kent MacCarter is an expatriate of Minnesota, Montana, and New Mexico, who has studied writing at the University of Chicago and University of Melbourne. He is now (2010) a permanent Australian resident.
He holds a BA in Accounting from the University of Montana, a BA in Finance from the University of Montana, and an MA in English with a focus on Creative Writing from University of Melbourne. He has worked in publishing with the University of Chicago Press, and with educational publishers Cengage Learning and Curriculum Press in Australia.
As editor, he produced Joyful Strains: Making Australia Home (Affirm Press, 2013), a non-fiction collection of diasporic memoir. His poetry collections include In the Hungry Middle of Here (2009), Ribosome Spreadsheet (2011), and Sputnik’s Cousin (2014).
He has been involved with the running of both Melbourne PEN (2010–2014) and the Small Press Network (2009–2013).
