Danielle Ellis was born in Sydney, but raised primarily in Brisbane and Townsville. She completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at the University of Queensland in the late 1950s. Ellis moved to the Northern Rivers district of New South Wales in 1978 and to Sydney in 1992. She has worked as a botanist, a librarian and an editor.
