'Schumann the Shoeman was adored for two reasons. The first was for the shoes that he made, which were not only dazzlingly beautiful, but they lasted a lifetime and no two pairs were ever the same. The second reason was for the elegant shoe-shaped sign that hung outside his cobbler's shop in the busy little town of Newmarket.
