After a childhood in a poor village in central Vietnam, Nguyễn Hoàng Tranh came to Australia at the age of fourteen with his mother and siblings, following his father who had come as a refugee in 1976. He graduated in Economics and Law at the University of Sydney in 2001 and practices as a solicitor.
Tranh showed an early interest in literature, writing poems from the age of fourteen, and editing several Vietnamese Students Associations' magazines. In 2000 he joined the editorial board of Viet, the Vietnamese arts and literary journal, and was one of the founding members of TienVe, and Online Centre for Vietnamese Contemporary Literature and Arts (http://tienve.org). His work has appeared in Vietnamese literary journals in Australia and the USA and in 2002 his work was included in the Anthology of 26 Contemporary Vietnamese Poets published in the USA. His creative writing is in Vietnamese.
