Donna Cameron graduated from the University of Southern Queensland and worked with La Boite Theatre in Brisbane before moving to Sydney. She began her professional life as an actor in the late 1980s and began writing plays in 1995. After graduating from the 1996 Playwrights Studio course at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Cameron travelled to Turkey and Asia and returned with her family to live at Coochiemudlo Island near Brisbane. She also holds a BA in theatre from the University of Southern Queensland and a Masters in Playwriting from the Queensland University of Technology.
In 1999, she became the Australian Writer's Guild/Queensland Theatre Company Playwriting Mentorship recipient. She has also twice received the Fresh Ground Scheme at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.
Cameron's first novel was published in August 2018, after development through a Regional Arts Development Fund grant and, later, a Varuna Litlink residency.
