'Author, Esther Mary Lyons was born in 1940. Abandoned by her American father, she was put in an orphanage. Life was hard and she had to eat a diet of unleavened Indian bread called chappatis, spinach, lentils, and rice and walk barefoot to church in 52 degree Celsius heat twice every Sunday. In spite of all the struggles to survive the poverty, blackmailing, rejections, and disadvantages she was able to get herself and her sister the education that enabled them to become teachers. Esther was then selected for Experiment in International Living scheme, and was able to visit the USA in 1965. She found her Jesuit priest father living with dispensation as a married man with an American lady in Denver, Colorado. After her return to India she became a commercial model and remained teaching. In 1966 she won the Femina Beauty contest and soon after acted in a documentary film on family planning in India. In 1972 she married and had two sons, one severely disabled. Her marriage fell apart in 1982 and she migrated to Australia with her sons and her old mother. There she went back to school and received a M.Ed., Grad. Dip in Special Education.
