Notes

  • The Chicago Citizen reports the death of a John Flood 'the well-known revolutionist and prison companion of the late John Boyle O'Reilly' on 9 September 1900 at '32 East Brookline-street, Boston, Mass.' The deceased's 'remains were ... guarded by representatives of the Wolf Tone Literary Association, the Irish American Club, the Celtic Literary Association, and the old Fenian Guard.'

The report states that this 'John Flood', aged about 60 at the time of his death, had been sentenced to 'four years hard labour'. The report provides details of Flood's youthful career, arrest in Portsmouth and trial in Dublin, and his association with O'Reilly. While the age at death and association with John Boyd O'Reilly tally with the life of the West Australian convict John Flood, other details do not correspond.
