BiographyHistory

Thomas Francis Meagher was an Irish nationalist who was transported to Van Diemen's Land following a conviction of sedition. In 1852, he escaped to the USA where he subsequently studied law and journalism, fought with the Union army during the American Civil War, and, ultimately, became Acting Governor of the Territory of Montana.
