BiographyHistory

The firm C. Platts was founded when Charles G. E. Platts opened a circulating libray and bookshop in Gillies Arcade in Adelaide in 1840. The business moved to Hindley Street in 1842, where it sold books, music and stationery as 'The Auction Mart'.

C. Platts was the publisher of a number of periodicals in Adelaide, such as Timothy Short's Journal of Passsing Events (1847-1854), the Wanderer (1853), the Thursday Review (1860-61), the South Australian Book Almanac (1860-63) and the Town and Country Record (1864-67). The firm was also involved in the publication and distribution of some original literary works by South Australians.

Platts died in 1871 and the stock was sold to E. S. Wigg.
