Dot Cannon was taken from her mother at the age of 18 months and made a state ward. She grew up in Sister Kate's Children's Home in Perth before being sent out to work as a domestic servant in Moora at the age of 14. She subsequently lived in Apollo Bay and Williamstown, Victoria.
