Jenny Lee attended high school in Tamworth and then studied history intermittently at the Australian National University from 1971-1979. She received an MA from ANU and, following a move to Melbourne, pursued an interest in labour history as an editor, archivist and writer. After editing a number of works, including A People's History of Australia (1988), she was appointed editor of Meanjin in 1987, continuing in that position until 1994. In subsequent years Lee worked as a freelance editor, contributing to a number of award-winning books in various genres. In 2000 she began her career as a teacher of editing and publishing at Deakin University. Lee joined Melbourne University's Publishing and Communication program in 2003.
