Dorothy McRae-McMahon was ordained as a Uniting Church minister at the age of 48. At that time she had been married for almost 30 years and had four children. Some years later, McRae-MaMahon realised and openly acknowledged her sexual orientation as a lesbian.
McRae-McMahon has written several books of rituals, liturgies and prayers in addition to her autobiography.
