BiographyHistory

William Milner was a Yorkshire printer who began publishing in Halifax in 1834. He travelled throughout the countryside to market his books, but also eventually established an office in London. Milner initially produced cheap, stoutly-bound 'improving' books for working-class readers, but as the business expanded the firm published books of all kinds, including contemporary novels, poetry, and children's books.

In 1850 the business became Milner and Sowerby, and in 1883 Milner and Company. It went into liquidation in 1913.
